Grooming Your Pomeranian

Armed with the correct tools, grooming your spunky little companion does not have to be complicated or time consuming.  Grooming an adult pom that has been trained since it was a pup to enjoy the process of being groomed is a pleasure for it's owner.  There is nothing more attractive than a pom with his coat groomed to perfection, every hair shining and standing straight off from his body.

Start with your pup or older pom lying on your lap.  If you have a male you can sprinkle baby powder or corn starch on the gummy spots underneath befor brushing to help clean the area.  The pom is a double coated breed which means you must brush in 1 " layers form the skin outward.  It is helpful to spray the coat after each layer is brushed.  I like to use a bit of conditioner in a spray bottle with water to help with the tangles.

To keep your pom looking tidy, you may like to trim the ears and feet.  It is best to ask your puppies breeder to show you how to do this the first time.  Practice makes perfect when it comes to grooming poms.

Caution:  Never shave a pomeranians coat.  The double coat serves him for warmth in winter and keeps him airconditioned in the summer.  Most poms will never grow their outer guard hairs back again if they are shaved.  It is a breed phenomenon nobody knows the answer to.  They do shed their undercoat once or twice a year and it will grow back.

Growth Stages of your Pomeranians Coat.  At ten weeks old your new puppy is a cute ball of fluff.  By 12-14 weeks old his fluffy coat may be getting sparse and his facial hair may start changing to his adult color and he may get what we call the monkey look. His body may be growing unevenly and he may be a bit gangly for a while too.  Around 6 months of age he is usually well on his way to growing his gorgeous shiny adult coat.  Most puppies turn from ugly duckling to gorgeous Pom by 9 months of age.  Of course no two are alike and some poms mature faster and some slower.
